City of Dreams Pavilion

2011, Competition

Our proposal for this competition to design a temporary pavilion for Governor’s Island responds to the brief’s calls for sustainability by repurposing wood edges—an abundant byproduct of hardwood milling. The wood sticks are cut, bound, and stacked on end to produce a thick, dense, richly textured space. The process mixes high-tech digital and low-tech analog strategies. Computer scripting is used to create a vague, undulating silhouette and a variegated pattern of density that accommodates permeability for views and thickening for structural loads. A hanging canopy of ropes and nets is suspended above to provide partial shade and cover from the elements.
